February 18th

"Forum on Haiti and the Dominican Republic"

This event was truly one-of-a kind as we brought together over 50 members of the local Haitian and Dominican communities for an exploration of their history, and an open dialogue about present day tensions and conflict.  It was an evening of education, frank discussion and potential understanding.

Co-sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Rhode Island and the Unity Center of Rhode Island College, it featured singing by Fritza Remy and a Caribbean inspired menu followed by a forum with a presentation from Dr. Silvio Torres-Saillant.

The over 85 attendees were moved by the reading of a poem written by local playwright and community activist Elvys Ruiz.  It powerfully describes the ongoing pain experienced by Haitians and Dominicans as a result of their enslavement by Americans many years ago.  It was written for this event.
